texts not sending to New contact

I can receive texts from a new contact but j cannot send them. It just says message fails. The number is correct and all other texts send. It just doesn't like this number. Suggestions?

Hi, try sending sms to this particular contact with another phone.

Are you sending sms by entering the contact number or from phone book?

From the phonebook. If I copy and paste the number in to the to section it now sends. Just not direct from the phonebook

Have you tried deleting and re-entering the contact into the phonebook?

I did that twice. It is now working but I had to delete all the messages etc first. Then 're-add it as a local contact. I'm not sure how or why that worked.
