Long story short:

I want to restore our R600 but I'm stuck in DOS with a USB drive. There is no setup.exe on the the CDs (3 of) to start a reboot. (I tried restore.exe but got a few lines of DOS, not an actual error, though.)

Can anyone help before I go to bed? If not, I'll see you tomorrow!

Cheers,

Chris

Kee-Lo - I've got it working!

Well done Chris!

Now I'm trying to think what you could do. Have you had a look in the batch files?

Maybe you can do something like SETUP or RESTORE in DOS?

No luck there, Kee-Lo. I tried all the .exe files listed on the CD - about 4, I think - but none worked.

Has anyone done a DOS/USB restore with a Sony laptop?

Cheers,

Chris

Found this on Vaio Link:

restorer 1:1 ¿f F:\sony.img

which should work from DOS. But it doesn't. Another bloody frustrating weekend then...

Chris

Well, would you listen to her!

I can only apologise for the bad language... eh... again... but I'm sure you can appreciate that I was extremely angry... eh... again. :smileyblush:

To end this thread a little more postitvely, let me first say that the problem is now solved - because I've just spent £60 on eBay to buy the pukka PCGA-CD51/A drive the R600. Now, in Vaio-Link somewhere it said that (paraphrased) '... you'll need a CD/DVD drive that has a PCMCIA interface to boot'. (As luck would have it, I had a mini centronics - PCMCIA lead that would have fitted my Archos USB drive... but I sold it LAST WEEK! ) Anyway, I'm certain it would have worked...

But the PCGA-CD51 (with or without the 'A' - the drives are exactly the same, only a Win 2000 driver distinguishes them) has worked. The previous mention of a DOS line on Vaio-LInk that should have worked was this:

"If you cannot read from a CD in DOS:

Start your VAIO and wait until you are back at the Windows desktop.

Copy the contents of the supplied (first) Recovery CD (1/2) - If your recovery requires two recovery CDs, copy the file sony.I01 to your secondary partition.

Restart your VAIO in DOS.

At the prompt, type the drive letter for your secondary partition drive (e.g. G:) and press ENTER.

Type cd sony and press ENTER.

Type the command: restorer 1:1 ¿f F:\sony.img and press ENTER - The system recovery process starts immediately."

Ah, well it didn't for me - I've no idea why. But it might for you, if you've got DOS installed and only the Sony image CDs to work from...

So I've spent nearly three weeks trying to sort this out, I bought a useless £24 FireWire lead when I really wanted an iLink lead - the difference being 6-pin or 4-pin, which I know NOW. But the R600 is booted and even has SP2 installed on it now.

Now I've just got to get it all sold (lead & PCGA-CD51 included) on eBay this Thursday.

What an episode! :smileyrolling_eyes:

Cheers,

Chris
