How do I update my ATI mobility radeon 9200

Hi can someone please help with my problem. Im a computer beginner so make it simple

I have a sony vaio note book with a Ati mobility radeon 9200 graphic card and want to know how i can update it.

Sony have not to date released any updates for that particular card, so the simple answer is you can't. If it's absolutely essential that you must upgrade there are third party (unsupported) updates available, however they aren't especially targeted at the beginner.

May I ask why you must upgrade? If it turns out to be necessary I'm sure someone will help you out to safely use third party drivers.

Well...not quite correct.
Soory TigerTiger but i must disagree.

No problem to update the drivers on "ANY" Sony Notebooks.
There are 2 ways to do that:
1. Get the Mobile Mod software, download the latest drivers from www.atitech.com or www.ati.com. Run the MobileMod after unzipping the drivers, choose the proper info file for operating system and there u are.

2. The best method and simplest is to download the omegadrivers and just install them.These drivers are even better than the original one because they are "MODDED" for best game and compatibilty mode.
Look at www.omegadrivers.com, or www.driverheaven.com or google-it.

Those are all third party (unsupported) nemo, which means a beginnner such as our thread-starter gentleman may find things a bit rough if everything goes pear-shaped.

And I know everyone thinks the world of Omegadrivers, I do too but they can and do go wrong. Their dual monitor settings are bloody awful it took me forever to sort them out in earlier version. Gettin' better though...

You should take care with advising peaple to use the mobile modder!

Whilst it does allow the new CATALYST drivers to be installed on a laptop... ...they are simply not designed for mobile chips!

At least the Omegadrivers (www.omegadrivers.net) are modified to work with mobile chips.

I really woud'nt recommend anybody using the mobile modder, you could ruin you graphics chip!

The same goes for overclocking.... ....NEVER OVERCLOCK A MOBILE GRAHPICS CHIP!... ....it will fail, very quickly!

With regards to the overclocking function in Omega drivers, i have found it very useful, to UNDERCLOCK the GPU memory. A miniscule reduction of 10Hz on my 9700 has drastically reduced the occurance of that horrible overheating error i get in games that scrambles the screen. Ive noticed no performance hit whatsoever so its all good in my opinion.

Just dont OVERclock, but UNDERclock!

ATI do not support laptops directly as they do not control any aditional features etc that notebook manufactures may put on the laptop's..It is very different than making a reference design for a standard agp/pci-e card.

I think you'r slightly missing my point!

I not saying that the mobile modder will harm a laptop.. ..I realise what the modder does... ...it is the drivers it allows you to install that can cause the harm!

ATi does not release these drivers for laptops because it does'nt test them on mobile chips! It's not only because of the extra features that some laptop manufacturers can add (and they don't in reality do this anyhow). It's also because these drivers push the graphics chips that little bit harder and are therefore not suitable for mobile chips where temperature increases (due to more core processor activity) can be damadging!

It is also slightly mis-informative to say that the Omega drivers are built for desktops with just the infs added for laptops!

Whilst this may have been true until faitly recently, Omega has worked on the code and overcome several issues relating to mobile chips and optimised his drivers to accomodate them! The mobile modder on the other hand does exactly what you accuse the Omega drivers of, in this regard!

All of these 'non-official' ways of updating you mobile graphics card drives have some inherent risk, but are the only way of getting some of the more recent games to run on VAIO laptops (which are certainly up to the job!). I think it is better to use the drivers that have at least been re-coded to be more compatible with the mobile cards... ...at the moment this restricts you to the Omega drivers!

On a personal note, I have been using the Omega drivers on my VGN-A115Z (Mobile Radeon 9200 64Mb) now for several months with no problems what so ever!
