VGN-A215Z :: Wither the manuals?

Just bought a VGN-A215Z.. cool machine (especially after slogging it out on a Pentium MMX for a looong time ).

One grouse, though.... where are the laptop manuals for this model?! Nothing in the "Manuals" section in Club Vaio, and not much documentation with the laptop either....

Help would be very appreciated.

No "Viao Documentation" link or program group in "All Programs"... but there is a "My Info Centre" icon on main start menu. Documentation accessible from there.

Btw, I have had conflicting reports about upgrading memory on a Sony Vaio. I have been told that if I do it myself, I will end up vioding the warranty. Also that the memory upgrade even if done by an authorized Sony dealer will void warranty if memory module is not a "Sony" brand.. even if the spec of third party memory (Samsung/Buffalo/Hitachi) matches the laptop requirements exactly.

Is this true?

Upgrading the memory in your VAIO should not invalidate the warrenty.

Hell, It even tells you how to do this in the manuals that you have now found!

However, bear in mind that if you update the BIOS for any reason in the future it is best to go back to the original memory configuration asthe process can hang and corrupt the BIOS if additional memory is installed!

As Woody said - upgrading the memory is a perfectly legit thing to do and will not void the warranty.

I think the only conditions is that it has to be Sony memory.

Crucial are a very good place to get memory

But where do the online manuals go after a restore?

I have this same notebook but I built recovery disks and rebuilt to remove the recovery partition to free up disk space.

Rebuild went fine except now no manuals available from Infocentre and no C:\My Documentation.

Help!

And the manuals are usually at http://www.vaio-link.com/manuals/manuals.asp?l=en

If they aren't there yet then they will be eventually, it's one of the things Sony do pretty well.

Thanks for the pointer to online manuals.
I didn't get any cds with the my notebook - I don't think Sony ship recovery disks or documentation cds any more.

I'm just worried something else may be missing after a restore.
Building the recovery disks yourself obviously doesn't back up everything that's shipped on the notebook.

The recovery partition and making your own recovery disks is a horrible cost cutting measure. When you pay a premium for a Vaio notebook (Even the cheapest models are more expensive than the competition) then you deserve a proper premade recovery CD.

Having to burn your own RCD is a stupid idea and Sony should be ashamed of their penny pinching on this.

Many thanks for the clarification. I also think (as one of you points out) that putting in a non-Sony brand in would invalidate the warranty. Which is a bummer as Sony products are generally more expensive as compared to other brands.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys. Have another query but will open a new thread for that rather than expand this one.
