killed my Sony PCG-FX602 laptop after bios flash, help pls

Hi,

I unfortunately think Ive killed my Sony PCG-FX602 laptop after what I think is a bad bios flash with some new bios which I found here http://www.vaio-link.com I followed the information found here: http://www.vaio-link.com/UK/info/Bios_R0121K5.shtm. not sure why it went wrong I did everything stated. When powered up the laptop beeps a few times and nothing is shown on the screen. Any idea what I need to do? Do I need a new bios chip? Hope someone can help Im in my last yr at uni and need the laptop up and running asap.

Press F2 when the sony sign appears and make sure you reset to factory settings.

yup have tried that, no sony logo appears. The laptop powers on, beeps a few times and shows a blank screen.

I fear I have bad news for you - unless you can retry the flash then your computer is an expensive doorstop. Sony will be able to repair it but I think they just replace the motherboard. Have a look on the web and see if you can find a company which will replace the bad BIOS flash memory. It will be dificult to find someone who does this in the UK.

What is it with people? FLASH the BIOS only if you have a need to. The chances are, providing you haven't done any drastic changes to the hardware that the BIOS is fine as it is.

A bad flash can scrap a board and this sounds like it has done. The only way around it is to open up and exchange the BIOS chip, but this can be hugely expensive.

I agree with all of the above - the only reason I didn't say it was because I didn't want to upset javuvu any more

But you are dead right - BIOS flashing should only be done for specific benefits and definately not just to have the latest version. Perhaps javuvu had a good reason to flash the BIOS.

Not many people will replace the BIOS chip on a notebook - usually the repair involves a new motherboard.

tried to flash cos was having all sort of probs with the system crashing etc, got in contact with biosflash.co.uk, hopefully they can reprogram the bios chip for me and it'll with luck go back to normal. thanks for the help.

Chaps, if the computer was working before the bios flash...and trhe new bios was downloaded from Vaio Link.....does Sony have some responsibility ????

I don't think so, as they always have a doc saying "we cannot be held responsable" and all that stuff.

I think you could claim it was their responsibility if the flash was done as a result of their 'over the phone' Vaio Link service.

They frequently suggest downloading and installing the latest BIOS - in fact the first time my GRX went wrong I was told to do a BIOS update even though there was none available at the time
