VAIO W2 - Can it connect to a Surround System?

I'm relatively happy with my new Vaio W2, however the sound is pretty poor.
Before buying it, the sales man reassured me I could connect it with a pair of speakers or even a surround system for some decent music/dvd playing.
I am now probably being thick but how on earth can I connect my W2 with the sound system I bought on purpose? I was shocked to find out that the Vaio W2 only has Sound INputs.
Please tell me I'm wrong and the W2 can be connected to speakers like any decent PC does. And how to do it.

Does the manual not mention any sound OUTputs? You may have been given the wrong advice by the salesman. I have just looked at Sony's spec sheet and no digital OUTputs did I spy.

Please bare with me - I will try to find USB or FireWire compatible products for you...

Here we are, something that might to the job:smileywink:

Amazon.co.uk: FireWire External Sound Card

Its pricey and I don't know if the speakers are sold separately. With FireWire you may need an external AC power supply for the surround sound system - Sony cut corners and only solder 4 of the 6 pins - 2 pins carry power (hence the need for external power on a Sony machine), and the 4 other pins carry data (in this case audio).

With FireWire installation is a piece of cake - just plug it in when Windows is running!

If this is not exactly what you had in mind then let me know and I will try to get something that is.

I use the PCV PW1, have you thought of adding a Sony VTX-D800 Free View box , that has twin scarts PHONE and Optical out and possable might just link Via that . That might help as far as TV viewing

And should funds allow I would Go for This Stunning , SONY DAV-F1

the w2, like the w1 has an optical out my friend, so easily connected to a surround kit..

make sure to go volume control>advanced properties and make sure spdif is ticked on..

if using the headphone socket is your only option then id only recommend it for stereo use, it wouldnt be true surround sound if you hooked up that way...

James I think the original poster would be better off getting a Creative Extergy, they now support 7.1 surround!

you can buy a connection to fit the headphone socket and it has two outputs on them left and right this would help

This was the first time I used a Forum and I didn't expect much. Why would someone, afterall, waste their time helping me?
Well, how wrong I was, you've been so very nice and I thank you all.

I will now chase all your suggestions and see what I can do. Naturally I'll post my results, should they be useful to someone else...

Yes it was in Season 3, not sure of the episode name.
