VPCF11S1E HDMI output can connect to a 120Hz monitor?

Hi,

Since I couldn't find a search function within this forum, please forgive me if this question was already answered (looking manually through thousands of posts it's not exactly "fun" :))

I have a Sony Vaio VPCF11S1E/B laptop.
I purchased a Samsung 2233RZ monitor (3D Vision ready, 120Hz).

Also, and since the connection to the monitor is only DVI, I used a HDMI-DVI connector that came with my graphics card of my desktop system (I assume that is a normal connector, it came with a EVGA GTX460 graphics card).

I connected the monitor to the laptop and turned on the monitor. After that I changed my Windows 7 configuration to display only in the Samsung display (I also tried with the Extended view).
The display is detected and the correct resolution is configured (1680x1050) but the frequency stays at 60Hz.

I even tried to change this configuration manually through the Nvidia control panel but it will only display 60Hz (also, it is only stated that the frequency supported is 60Hz - by windows and the nvidia control panel).

Thinking that might be something wrong with the monitor, I tried to connect it to my desktop system. It was detected correctly the resolution and frequency.
The only difference was that I connected directly to a DVI port in the desktop.

I also tried with another HDMI-DVI connector but with no luck.

Is this a limitation of the HDMI output?
Could it be from the connectors I used?
Something else?
Any ideas?

PS: when I connect the monitor to the HDMI-DVI connector I get a message from the Vaio Event Service saying that I could change the resolution... I clicked in the balloon but every option in the Vaio Control Center is grayed out and I cannot change anything.
