If I remember correctly, although all premium Xperias in past have 4K display, they display majority of contents in FHD (such as home screen etc) except for certain contents such as photo or video.
Does Xperia 1 do the same thing, or maybe instead of FHD+, it uses QHD+ like XZ3 or "all time 4K"?
@RihoAhagon69 wrote:But, according to Gsmarena, it has always 4k displaying.
This is because @Viridis said Xperia 1 (Code name:Griffin) screen works in 4K all the time, which is a fake news

Ok I actually am using the xperia 1 now j9110,
CPU-z and antutu benchmark states the screen resolution is 1096*2560
With 2,805,760 pixels.
FHD 1920*1080 is 2,073,600 pixels
QHD (4k) 3840*2160 is 8,294,400 pixels
What is going on?
Sony say the screen is 1644x3840 which is 6,312,960 pixels. Why is mine 3,507,200 pixels short?
The screen is in 1080p by default. Connect to the phone via adb and run wm size to get the default size.
@PsYCOW the resolution 1644x3840 is correct. It's 4k in 21:9 aspect ratio.

So to use in 4k I need to use pc to change it like my xz2 premium?
Does it even switch to 4k for related apps? I wouldn't know how to test it. Although I can watch YouTube videos in 4k but dunno if it's actually doing it or downscaling.
It does indeed switch to 4k in related apps that support 4k
You'd need a kernel that supports native 4k. Wait on the sony dev channel to release that.
I was just wondering how I can get 4k all the time thanks James.
In a way you are already.
Whatever resolution upscaled to 4k as standard, and then when you watch 4k material, it's native 4k.
It really can't be much easier than that to explain, so I can't see how so many get their pants in a twist over it.
It's hardly rocket science.
I've been playing with the Game Recorder feature. At first, I was worried about; how do they solve for in-game sound, but I'm so shocked it's so good! Just by wearing Bluetooth earphones; it records the game sound clearly and perfectly.
Anyways to your question. I noticed that it records the game in 1440p HD (I don't know if I'm supposed to add a 'F' or 'R' to that), which is 2.5K resolution -vs- 2160p 4K.
Soooo..... I don't know if mobile games run at 4K, but wow, it records amazingly well in 1440p. My game recording tests:
Video Games, Web Browsing, Apps, etc Screenshots are 3840 x 1644, again at 2.5K.
Reading everyone's comments. Maybe we're all wrong. I think it's 1440p 2.5K all the time. It's defiantly not 1080p all the time. When does it switch to 4K? I don't know, probably "Upscaled to 4K." I would think the screenshot resolution would be different between apps. However, I debunk that idea, I can play a 4K YouTube, but the screenshot resolution stays the same. Which is probably a screenshot is limited to only 3840 x 1644.
The lingo they probably use is; 4K, 4K (secure), 4K (upscaled), 4K (upscaled, secure).

If you're really into 4K all the time, you want to look over at XDA Forums.
^ Taught me how to use ADB Shell.

You can ADB shell.
or the easier way in Developer mode, and alter your "Greatest Width," I think to 820 dp?
I use to alter all my 16:9 Xperia phones screen ratio with these methods. C5 Ultra, Z5 Premium, XZ2 Premium, XZ Premium, XA, XA2, etc...
