XR42A90K Firmware Update to v6.8022 Problem
On the 14th May Sony released a firmware update (v6.8022) for my TV a XR42A90K.
Normally I leave updating for a couple of weeks to see if any bugs are reported, this time I didn’t listen to my own advice and installed it two days after release.
Now I find that the inbuilt Media Player no longer functions.
On attaching a USB device (correctly formatted with compatible files) in either port the USB screen takes a little longer to come up, selecting View content with Media Player takes you to the next screen where the Media Player scans the device. The scan will result in the display of thumbnails of movies/ tv shows, images and folders with content within. When I try to play a video instead I get a “Please Wait” notice which then disappears and I am left with a blank screen, and after waiting no video starts to play. Images will display. Also after the update the display of the USB contents also includes the hidden files with ._<filename> which didn’t happen before and now just litters up the screen.
If I then return to watching the TV and insert a different USB the Media Player will start to scan the device but this time it sits thinking with no end and no display of contents, in order to see the contents of another USB device the TV has to be restarted. I also feel the TV is a little slower navigating through Settings menus and the TV keeps telling me the batteries are running low which is not true the batteries are about a month old and register as 60% when inserted in another device which can display its level.
All files and USB devices have been viewed and used with this TV prior to this update without issue, I use the Media Player almost daily, up till now of course, although I’m using VLC, but it’s a bit juddery.
The TV has been restarted several times and power cycled.
I was wondering if I am the only one that is suffering this problem after the update or are others experiencing the same. Or if anyone who has installed this update wouldn’t mind trying out the Media Player to see if they encounter the same problems.
Also is there anywhere at Sony that I can register this problem, I had hoped Sony would have been more diligent after the update in September which knocked out some of the functions of the remote control, and was later resolved 3 months later (six months for some models).
Thanks for any info.

Hi @daveyh64
First, thanks for the heads up, I didn't know there was an update available 😀 Substantial upgrade from Android 10 to 12.
XR-55A95K
So while still on 6.7632
The only media that I play is footage from my Nextbase dashcam.
Media Player - Nothing, simply reports no media on the USB stick (exFat). This has never worked for me.
VLC - Everything works fine and has always done so.
Updated to 6.8022
Media Player - This now works! First time I have been able to use the built in Media Player.
VLC - No change.
Response - Immediate response all round.
I'm sorry I am not much help, when is the last time that you performed a full Factory Reset?

Hello
Thank you for replying.
Thats kind of ironic that your Media Player now works and mine is not after the update.
Think I will try installing the update again via USB see if that might help things along.
And a Factory reset is next on the list, I have the XR42 for 2 and half years and never Factory Reset
never had a reason to, the TV has been very reliable so far.
VLC I find a bit juddery and things look as if they are over sharpened, (if I am going to use it regularly I can adjust through the TVs Picture Settings), there is also issue with the sound both VLC and the TV are set for passthrough but I'm only getting Stereo via my AV amp, it's the same with Kodi, regardless that the Audio is 5.1 Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital + or DTS, the inbuilt Media Player had no problems in that area.

Hi @daveyh64
I doubt if the USB update will work, it will probably just report, already up to date. That is, even if it does anything.
I’m a fan of doing a Factory Reset every now and then to clear out the cobwebs 😀. Then again I am a “non-fiddler”. I never play with picture settings etc. so nothing to set up again apart from setting some inputs to Enhanced.

You are probably right the TV may well say you I am up to date and not reinstall the latest version again.
But I have to try something before going for the Factory Reset.
I have also noticed that newly formatted USBs (exFAT) with a couple of movies on no longer get the full list of folders transferred on to them by the TV.
The full list being;
Alarms
Android
DCIM
Download
Movies
Music
Notifications
Pictures
Podcast
Ringtones
Only 4 folders are being put on the USBs
Android, Music, Movies and Pictures
Don't know if that is significant.

Oh well.
Software update would not run again, fair enough.
Factory reset, no improvement, cheesed off.
Gone through all the settings downloaded apps, etc, etc, etc, soul destroying all for nothing.

I've had the same issue on my X95J. The TV seems to rebuild the "index" of my flashdrive, which contains all my audio files (more than 20000). It take so much time to index all the files that even a whole night leaving the tv on isn't enough. And then the next day, the index is gone, and it starts rebuilding it o_o .
Please help us, I can't listen to my music anymore 😞 .
FYI I just installed the Android 12 update 3 days ago.

I defragmented my USB drive where I had my music, and it solved the file indexing problem. I can access my files again on the Media Player.

After the latest update the TV failed to recognise my flashdrive - I had to format it before I could use it again. Maybe try backing up your files, formatting and then restoring your files.

This morning, same thing : the Media Player started rebuilt the index of all the files I have on my flashdrive. It went faster, but it had not memorised it.
I'll try formating it to see if it improves the process.
About A12 : some folders were added in the flashdrive and my hard drive too. Does A12 have something to do with the whole rebuilding thing ? I wonder...
