Sony STR-DN1020 and NAS

Hello chaps,

I write because I am having mixed results with my ethernet-compatible amplifier (Sony STR-DN1020 -http://www.sony.co.uk/product/hcs-home- ... str-dn1020 - yes, my firmware is up to date), to which I am trying to stream music from my NAS (Synology DS411j - http://www.synology.com/us/products/DS411j/index.php). If I access the NAS directly from the amp, I can stream music fine. This is OK, but the amp interface on the TV is *awful* (I have to scroll up and down with the TV remote control; it is a tiny box in the middle of a large screen; the display is text-only - in short, it feels like I have telnetted in to a system set up in the '80s), so I'd rather use the iPad/iPhone Synology DS Audio apps (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ds-audio ... 95303?mt=8) to interact with my DS directly.

However, when I connect to it using my iPad/iPhone, and select the Sony STR-DN1020 as the player, any time I try to play a track, nothing happens on the iPad, and I get "cannot play" displayed on the TV screen (on the amp interface). This is really annoying, as I can play the same track if I select it manually by scrolling through the amp interface, which takes much longer, and rather defeats the point of the iDevice apps.

As such, my first question is, why can I only use the amp to select music from the NAS, not use the iPad app (or the web interface for the NAS, for that matter) to select music for the NAS to send to the amp?

My second problem is that I can't get the amp to display any pictures or videos - they turn up in the file system with exclamation marks, and just don't do anything. This is similarly annoying, as I would like to be able to view them on my TV. My second question, therefore, is, why is this happening?

Many thanks in advance for such help as any of you is able to provide!

All the best,

Chris

Hi,

Has nobody got any ideas? It's so frustrating to have an audio station that can stream music to amps, and an amp that has streaming capabilities, but not be able to make the two talk to each other! Why will the STR-DN1020 not let me stream to it?

Yours in desperation,

Chris

Has nobody got any ideas?! I have a more complex - and confusing - setup now, but perhaps the new variables will shed some light, and cause someone to have a helpful brainwave...

At home we now have one Sony STR-DN1020, two Synology DiskStations (my DS211j, running DSM 4.0-2228, and my Dad's DS411j, running DSM 4.0-2198; both are running Audio Station 3.0-2205, iTunes Server 1.1-2256, and Media Server 1.0-2252), and two iPads (both running iOS 5.1.1 and v. 4.0-097 of the Synology DS Audio app). It seems that, if either of us uses the iPad app to send a song from *my* NAS to the STR-DN1020, it generally *works*, but only if we select the song from a shared playlist or a folder (but not if we just select the same track from e.g. the artists section). This does not work if we try to do the same from my Dad's NAS. If no music was playing when we try to play something from his, it just says 'cannot play'. Something very curious happens, however, if one of us is playing a song from my NAS on the STR-DN1020, and the other then tries to send a song from his NAS to the same device: the 'cannot play' message pops up for a second or two, then _the next song on MY playlist starts playing_. To qualify: if I am playing e.g. song 4 on one of my playlists from my NAS, and my Dad tries to play one of the songs from his NAS, the result is that song 5 on MY NAS starts playing!!

Oh, and to make matters more confusing, songs will only play if a playlist has more than one song.

So, any thoughts, anyone?! Why does sending a request to play a song from one NAS work, but only under certain circumstances - and why does sending an identical request to play a song from the other NAS cause the previously playing playlist to skip forward one track?

Any thoughts at all would be very gratefully received. Until then, we'll carry on testing...

Thank you!

Chris

Hi Have you tried running the server as uPnP and use the Sony 'MediaRemote' App, this may help

Serviio have a nice App for your servers, it will overcome any file format issues when using Sony products
