SONY BRAVIA XR65A90JU 65" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR OLED TV with Google TV & Assistant - Disappointed

Having bought this TV to replace my Panasonic 55" due to my wife's bad eye sight, we thought a change of brand would be good having heard SONY was a great brand. We are both around 60 years old, but tech savvy

Positive - lovely visual and colourful screen

Negative - On my OLD Panasonic I was able use my Apple iPods (I have hearing difficulties) and use at a higher volume so that my wife could listen to the TV speakers at a lower volume at the same time.

I am totally devastated the my new TV does NOT have this basic functionality that my OLD PAPANASON has, and is MANY years old, UNBELIEVABLE. (will a future software update cure this)? Or do I delegate the TV to a bedroom and buy a Panasonic?

Also, we have another bug, frequently whilst watching a film the TV we get a pop up "Idle TV power off - TV will soon turn off, press a button to keep it on" ????

This has us scrambling around for the remote, I can find no settings to disable this.

I am also disappointed with the limitation of use of the remote with my Virgin Cable box, I am used to being able to still use the sound control on my Virgin box to controls the TV sound.

Google assist, not keen, limited integration with my Amazon Echo.

I also bought a SONY HT-S40R 5.1 Sound Bar, I no longer use due to the limitations of control and no access to manually turn of the BASE - The TV sound is excellent, better than the soundbar

Summary

Overall if the sound control to use my iPODS as well as TV speakers worked and the power bug fixed I would be extremely happy.

I also bought a SONY HT-S40R 5.1 Sound Bar, I no longer use due to the limitations of control and no access to manually turn of the BASE - The TV sound is excellent

Hi @MickDav

Idle TV Power Off - Settings -> System-> Power & energy -> Energy saver -> Turn off TV after -> I have mine set to 24 hours or you could simply turn off Allow TV to turn off while watching.

There should be no problem setting up your Virgin remote to control the TV volume. The codes for changing volume and power have not changed on a Sony TV for 40 plus years. If your model is not listed then try a similar model name. You need to refer to your virgin remote guide.

My personal opinion is Sound bars are a waste of money, Especially on high end Sony TVs. Use the speakers.

As far as I can see Sony has dropped the use of Bluetooth headphones and speakers in use at the same time. It is one or the other. Why, who knows, perhaps their diagnostics show it was hardly used. So it sounds like you need to relegate the TV to your bedroom and buy a Panasonic.

I don’t know if it helps, but Sony do produce a solution to help one member of the family who needs assistance. It is called a SRS-LSR200 handy speaker. You have to use the Digital Audio Out. I suppose there may be a work-a-round for your iPods by connecting a Bluetooth transmitter to the Digital Audio Out. You’re on your own there!

Hi @LightFoot

Thanks for your quick rely and advice, it is well appreciated.😀👍

With your guidance I have found and amended the power saving setting.

Also

My Virgin Box remote control config, amazing thanks

I will look into the DAT output to see if there is a solution for my iPods,

Question, can the (digital) output be used at the same time as the TV speakers?

Hi @MickDav

Yes, according to the Sony help page which includes your TV 😀

Based on this one ''The TV cannot output sound from both the headphones or Bluetooth audio device and the TV speakers at the same time.''

Messages or idle etc.  Time out settings .    Go to settings and you can Stop  pop ups timers etc. Enter detail on phone and you can get easy instructions where to find in settings.  ie "  Sony Bravia  OLED TV keeps timing out ".  How to stop notification on the TV. ec. The menu is a bit complicated but I followed it on my phone for pop ups, timing out, channel messages .Turning off. Its easily fixed. Knowing how to find it is the hard part

I know, this is a bit annoying when my old Panasonic (some 6-8 years old) had this BASIC functionality, just shows that SONY have not thought this through given the modern use of Bluetooth headphones, I should have stayed loyal to the PANASONIC brand that worked.

I have looked at tech using Digital output to Bluetooth, however feedback states there is a massive delay in the audio between TV sound and the Bluetooth, thus causing and echo.

Gutted that I have wasted over £2k

Hey MickDav, I'm not sure why didn't you check with Sony before purchasing that the TV supports the functions that you want, 2K is a lot. Anyway, You can use an external sound system to output the sound from your TV speaker and the sound system at the same time, the below link explains the exact steps that you need to try:

https://helpguide.sony.net/tv/iaep1/v1/en/08-05_09.html?hl=headphones

As for the Bluetooth, there's no workaround that will enable this feature to work at the same time with the TV speakers. And I'm not sure if there's going to be a software update to enable it.
