GRT-796 Vaio-Link Updates; Northbridge, etc. What are they?

After we got broadband I enthusiastically downloaded all the Vaio-Link updates for my GRT-796, but I have no idea what some of them are. [:">]

In particular there is: "Northbridge", "020604 Controller" & "PI I-O Controller". There is also a WLAN Driver 2.1.0.30224 update which seems totally different from the 3.0.6.0 driver I already have and an "LCD" set (of 3 files) which I have no idea what to do with!

Can anyone shed any light on these? (None of it is urgent - I just wanna know )

Hi Chris,

The Northbridge controller controlls I/O to and from the CPU.
The LCD is probably to improve it's performance and the WLAN one is older than your current driver.

If everything is OK I would leave it be.

Northbridge is the proprietary ATi Radeon AGP Controller name.

This product is excellent - it told me I had an IBM/Hitachi TravelStar 80GN Hard disk - i thought it was a Toshiba MK4062GAS!

I thought the Northbridge was on the mobo not GFX?

I'll check the Everest program, James - I've never heard of it but it sounds good. Your advice, Kee-Lo 'if it isn't broken...' ect. is sound. I shan't. :smileygrin:

... Just to muddy the waters; I also downloaded the video driver update, which is Nvidia. Would the GRT have some ATi stuff as well?

Everest is very good Chris...
As for the graphics I have no idea, I thought they all used ATi chips....

Not all - some like the GRT996MP uses a nVidia Geforce Card. And NorthBridge is a GFX thing according to Everest.:smileywink:

BTW: My HDD (the IBM/Hitachi TravelStar 80GN 40GB) is NOT noisy at all - its so quiet that the fan obscures the noise produced. LOL - So you can wrap that up for your lunch! Haha:smileylaugh:

The Toshiba I have in the GRX is quite noisy...
