Try SuSE and Fedora Core - these are best distributions available, but some users have tried mandrake with success too...

SuSE for example costs between £10-£45 a BARGAIN!

Windows XP on the otherhand is more expensive.
Prices quoted from Amazon.co.uk

Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade (SP2) = £79.99
Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade (Non-SP2) = £82.45
Windows XP Home Edition Full = £153.49

Windows XP Professional Upgrade (Student with SP2) = £64.49
Windows XP Professional Upgrade (Non-SP2) = £125.00
Windows XP Professional Upgrade (SP2) = £151.99
Windows XP Professional (Full) = £64.00

Ludicrous pricing, and *cough* a total rip-off *cough*
M$ are just after your money...

I have SuSE 9.1 pro working a treat only problem was the modem driver which cost me £15 .... they say for developmental costs. You could try Linmodems.com they have a shackled version 18kbps for free compatability test. Ati drivers are at beta, but mines a ati9200 and I play unreal tourny just fine. Maya is a little fussy but works well after some twitching. Try a live cd first if you have broadband try knoppix, which is gentoo based, but still good. Best of luck unshackling your self from M$. pitty sony don't make a unix based system?
