VAIO K315S - taking ages to shut down! pls help

Hi,

I've had a VAIO K315S since Monday, running Windows XP home Service Pack 2, and i'm finding it takes a looong time to fully shut down - the screen stays plain blue for a long time before the computer switches off.

I do have a separate hard-drive attached via firewire, as well as a printer, mouse and modem (USB). Could it be to do with these peripherals or is it something else?

Please help!

Cheers

Could be, try disconnecting some of them via safely remove hardware before shut down.

Could be - remove all of your bits and pieces from your PC - the hard disk is very likely the one thing that will hold it up:smileywink:

Shutdown again and see if it makes a difference. Also close down all programs first as well.

Hey,
cheers for that.

I'm wondering whether XP is set by default to clear the page file at shutdown.....just been reading up on that. Not at home right now to check, but i'd have thought it was pre-set NOT to clear it on shutdown.

The attached hard drive, only has a couple of files on it - it's just a storage location - so it seems wierd that it would be the cause of a long shut-down time

- any idea why that might be?

Sometimes things just cause a slow shut down, like crashes when closing drivers down etc.

Try turning off the printer early too,

The reason is that Windows XP uses an optimised method of write caching so Windows will keep stuff in memory whilst Windows XP is shutting down... Removing it should do the trick:smileywink:
