Xperia XA F3111 - Unable to update OTA or through Xperia Companion!

Hi, I recently purchases an Xperia XA, and I've been using it for the past week or so, and earlier today I decided to install the latest update (Marshmallow build 33.2.A.3.105) to eventually update it to Android 7.0 Nougat.

My problem, is that when I tried to update the phone (Directly OTA), it downloaded the update, and when it finished, I pressed install/ continue, it then started installing, the phone rebooted once, and returned to the lock screen as if it was just normally rebooted. I then went into the settings to see if it had updated and it was saying that the update was unable to be installed (did give me an error code or reason why). So I tried again (4 times in total), and it gave me the same result every single time.

So, as an alternative method of updating, I downloaded Xperia Companion on my PC (Window 7 SP1 64-bit, all windows updates installed), and plugged my phone into a USB 3.0 port on the back of my motherboard, Xperia Companion detected the phone and told me that there was an available update (Same build - 33.2.A.3.105), so I told it to install, and it started to download the update. Once it had finished, it came up with a message asking me if I wanted to install it now, or do it later, I pressed update now.

It gave me a box with a few options, ('Next' 'Back' & 'Cancel'), I clicked 'Next', expecting it to go to the next page, and install the update, but nothing happened, the menu didn't progress onto another screen, the phone didn't do anything (It was connected the entire time the update was downloading), no messages on the phone...Nothing.

So, I waited about 15 minutes for something to happen, but it never did, so I canceled the update, and tried downloading again. And like before, it downloaded the update, I pressed 'Next', and still nothing. So I rebooted the phone, my PC, and downloaded a fresh copy of Xperia Companion, and tried again - Same result.

I've now turned off my antivirus (and kept it off until I manually close Xperia Companion), and I'm now downloading the update again, I personally don't have a lot of confidence that it'll work though. I've also tried running it as administrator (done it for all attempts). If this attempt doesn't work, then I'll turn on developer options, and enable USB debugging, which probably won't help, but you never know. Fingers crossed that this one works. Folded_Hands

Anyone have any issues like this, and were you able to fix them? If so how?

Thanks in advance for any replies Slightly_smiling_Face

@Dan_Thomas,

I'm not sure what's going on here. If you have another PC, try it on that. If not, back up your phone and run a software repair using Xperia Companion. It should install the latest update available during the process.

@jampinkoigaisano,

Nougat is available for the X series however we are unable to confirm specific date for any particular firmware release due to the nature of the approval process as the updates are customised by multiple parties before being released.

Hi @Dan_Thomas,

Welcome to the community. I am sorry to hear about this. Slightly_frowning_Face

Any update on your most recent update attempt?

The update has almost finished downloading. I'll post a reply with the result.

UPDATE: Same exact thing happened, clicked 'Next', and nothing happened. When I click 'Next', the button goes a slightly darker shade of blue.

I've attached an image of what I'm seeing now. I made a backup of my data before the first attempt.

@Dan_Thomas,

Try the following one after the other:

  • Try connecting your phone to a different USB port and if possible use a different USB cable.
  • Restart your PC
  • Uninstall, Re-download and re-install Xperia Companion.

I'll give those a go a bit later on, as it's almost 3am here Slightly_smiling_Face

I'l post an update once I've gone through those steps, and if any of them worked/ changed the outcome. On my most recent attempt, I used the USB cable that came with the phone.

Thanks.

Hi!

I'm just wondering, is Nougat update already available for XA through OTA or Xperica Companion?

UPDATE - I just downloaded the update on the phone (OTA), I pressed install now, the phone rebooted, but it just rebooted into a normal state, no install screen. I went into the settingg app and it said the update was installing, but after about 15 seconds it said that it had failed to install, please try again. So not sure what to do right now.

Hi, I've tried all the steps you listed. Used multiple USB ports & cables, restarted PC several times etc but still got the same result. Something else I forgot to mention, is when I use Xperia Companion to download the update, if I've tried it once, and it fails, and I try to update a second time, the update downloads very quickly, but on the phone is downloads at normal speed. Not sure why. I only have about 5Mbps, so it's not the fastest connection out there.

When it downloads quickly, the progress bar will go to about 30%, then it'll give me the option to cick 'Next' etc, which does nothing.

Hi, thanks for all the help. I performed a software repair, and it updated my phone to the lastest version.

I do have a minor problem though, my micro sd card that I had, was in the phone during the repair and now isn't being detected by the phone no matter what I do, so I'll plug it into my pc, format it, and then stick it back in the phone and see if that works. But like I said, it's not a major problem, just a minor inconvienence.

Can't wait until 7.0 Nougat get's fully released, looks great!

Thanks again,

- Dan.
