as far as i have read and experienced,
8mp shots are good because of the tech called Pixel Bining, wherein, it will use the whole 23mp sensor to create a 8mp images, it is most useful when you have a specific subjects to shoot at, like an inamimate objects or particularly on low light situations,.
23mp images are best when shooting landscape, wide angle images, or images that are best looked at when zoomed out.

23mp lots of grain and noise 8mp grainy and noisy. I'm sorry but the difference is very minimal both mp settings produce awful images even in well lighted environment. I like Sony xperia xz which I currently have and will probably be had after I return it or will I just be waiting for updates and improvements from Sony? Anyway shoot in 8mp, 20mp or 23mp. 4:3 or 16:9 and then compare even in manual try it.
