I want to be able to take a studio shot and it appear directly on my laptop (Sony) is this possible and if it is what kit do I need?

Looking at the range, the DSLR-A700 and above all come with remote capture control software which would indicate to me that the models below will be unable to accept remote based protocols from your PC meaning that at most you would be able to do is take a photo onto mem card but then having to keep connecting your camera to your Vaio.
Your best bet would be to consider using Eye-fi or something similar. http://uk.eye.fi/
Use the card in your camera and with something as powerful as Lightroom, you can run a watched folder or set it up for auto import meaning that images direct to your PC without having to worry about wires.
Will need a router also for this setup.
