Unable to open Raw files - any workaround?

Just upgraded from an A7 to an A73 and my knackered old computer doesn’t like it one little bit. It refused to accept the IED download with the A7, but the files would open in Preview and could be exported from there. Not perfect but it worked. The A73 is having none of it - error message right off the bat when trying to open Raw files in Preview. Is there a workaround for this, short of spending 3k on an iMac!! Currently running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 on a steam-driven Mac Pro.
