the only reason for that to be happening I can imagine is if the TV is set up as "Center" speaker for a (non exisiting) sourround system.
Usually the TV just plays back stereo sound trough the panel, but it is possible just to play back the "Center" channel trough the TV which would - in my eyes - match your description of sound usually coming out of front-left/front-right speakers of a sourround system to be missing.
