SongPal (Music Center) and STR-DN1050

Hi,

Sony has recently dropped support for my 2,5-year old AV receiver STR-DN1050 and thus made it impossible for me to remotely control it via wi-if with my iPhone - which was the main reason for choosing this particular receiver over others within the same price class.

How is Sony going to help me?

The receiver is still being sold and marketed as wi-fi controllable by that very app although that support for my receiver has been dropped. I see much of bad will here. Appreciate a feedback, thank you.

Absolutely disappointed with Sony.

Never never buy a Sony product again.

Support for this product has been dropped after only two years?  What does this say about Sony’s own respect and support of its ethical design credentials?

Such a waste of resources and environmental waste. Shame on you Sony

Sony are just scum. There was no technical reason why they dropped support. They could re-release the functional app today if they wanted to. They have done this purely to force customers to upgrade.

Their actions have turned my STR-DN1050 into a useless pile of junk in one fell swoop. I purchased this because of its multi-zone capabilities. How on earth am I supposed to play music in the bedroom in zone 2 without the app? Please tell me Mr sony.

I am also sick to the back teeth of getting the response "we apologize for the inconvenience" from customer services. An apology just does not cut it. You have rendered my device useless. This is criminal.

I urge all customers to carry on contacting customers services daily until they sit up and take note!

Hi Emlem73,

I'm not sure exactly why the Songpal support has ended for the STR-DN1050 in the newer versions of the app, however, I think this might be related to the way of communication between the app and other devices, which has been upgraded and thus, the STR-DN1050  won't be able to communicate with this new version anymore.

I guess Sony also stated that in the Songpal page in regards to the compatibility with this receiver here: https://bit.ly/2quo3vC.

Cheers,

When are sony going to fix this? The STR-DN1050 is COMPLETELY USELESS without the app. How are you supposed to play music in zone 2 without the app?

Sony should've left an old version in the Play Store/AppStore for users of older devices.

Has anyone tried the older software "ES Remote" from Sony? It's designed for older systems, but doesn't specifically list the 1050. Or "Network Audio Remote"? It might be worth trying.

The last version of Songpal /Music Center which worked was version 5.1.2.  You can pick it up from APKMirror and side-load it onto your device.

https://www.apkmirror.com/uploads/?q=sony-music-center-songpal

After you side-load it onto your device, to prevent it from every updating, use a "APK Signer" app like

https://shatter-box.com/knowledgebase/android-apk-signing-tool-apk-signer/

and rename the APK to some-thing else like 'Music Center 512" and then install your signed version.
