Hi there
These are the instructions that I followed but I will also give you the links to the forum pages on XDA developers, because there are two version to choose from... the standard which is from a chap called Jonasl and the second from Gimpsta who has a link to his website where you can skin (customise) the appearance of the keyboard.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654179 - Skin Your Keyboard
Both keyboards are in essence the same HTC keyboard which gives you a standard qwerty/compact qwerty/numeric keypad. The numeric auto flips into qwerty when you go from portrait to landscape with the phone which is the option I happen to love.
Hope you get on OK!

I'm wondering if you are using the stock messaging app and keyboard on phone.
I'm not entirely sure what you meant by changing paragraph but I use free Handcent sms from the market and the skinned(customised) HTC_IME keyboard from XDA developers site by a chap called Gimpsta (also free unless you wish to add to his beer stocks!). I seemed to be able to move around quite happily within the text body, inserting text, adding returns/extra lines.
Hope this helps?!

Hi just as an after thought I have tried the HTC_IME download on both Handcent and the stock messaging system and it lets you do a 'return' to get you
what you were after
Handcent app with HTC_IME keyboard
