Memory Failure on Sony Vaio PCG-GRX316SP (UK Model)

Hi All,

My VAIO: Sony VAIO PCG-GRX316SP, 1.7 GHz Pentium M, 512 MB Ram

I have been noticing over time my Vaio getting slower/sluggish and some unusual 'minor errors' at boot up, and in the general the system being a little shaky.

Recently, I notcied that the system was reporting only 256MB of RAM ( :anguished: !!!). More unfortunately my VAIO has passed its one year warranty.

I have tried reseating the memory modules, and I have also tried exchanging them from their original slots to see if there was a particular chip that was dead. But it boots up either way and reports 512MB ram.

I understand that their are other threads for the MP model, but I thought that I would start one for SPers.

Has anyone found a fix for this memory slot problem other than wedging something in between the cover and the chips? Sony Support is really expensive and often completely unhelpful. If anything it seems from all the posts that I have read that it may even be something engineered into the laptop - like the use of low quality solder or components for chip seats.

If you have any advice it would be much appreciated.

Damian

I haven't had this problem yet, and I really hope it doesn't happen, because my GRX is now 15 months old

My GRX 316MP is 18 months old and the display has just failed....*groan*

I know it sucks.
Anyway found this on eBay, maybe you could buy it and replace the display: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3450225575&category=3717

:anguished: . Just had the quote back from SONY to fix the non-booting PCG-GRX416SP SONY Vaio. the diagnosis is that it is a faulty processor and it is going to cost £902 to fix.
What a joke. I am never buying another SONY product again.

 ...it is a lot! Especially when you can buy the processor in question on the internet for £175!

OMFG that's a disgrace. It would be far cheaper for you to buy a new notebook than waste time with this. Also it would be cheaper for you to get an enclosure for the old hard disk, so you can transfer your data to the new disk.

£902 for a Mobile P4 - that is totally shocking - what are they replacing it with; a diamond encrusted processor :!:

I would be taking the retailer to the small claims court!

If it is the processor, buy one off Ebay and fit it yourself.

Should cost you in the region of £100 to fix.

... and if you can't - see if you can find a laptop repairer in your area, they definately won't charge £900+
