Mic issues in so many SONY devices

Internal mic on my Xperia XA1 Ultra intermittantly does not work. I can only talk over the speakerphone or external devices like headset or car's bluetooth. It works when using data example whatsapp calls or phone calls over wifi. I have reset my device a couple of times. Double un-checked unnecessary phone and mic app permissions. Whats up with this thing? So many Sony users complaining about the same. Is there a software patch to fix this? I haven't damaged or abused the phone in any way, so where did this come from since the last few months?

Hi @Gb23, sorry to hear about this.

How is the microphone working in the inbuilt test in the device? This test can be found in Settings > Support > Tests > Microphone.

If it works fine in the test, try restarting your device in safe mode and see if you are able to be heard in calls that are made without enabling the loud speaker, when downloaded applications aren't loaded.

I have done all these tests. The mic comes out as working in the diagnostics and the safe mode. However I have used the phone with the barebones apps (after a reset) for a week and the mic fails numerous times. I dont have any rogue apps installed on the phone- The usual maps and weather. The mic has an issue. Its as if its muted by default. But rarely isnt.

Hi again @Gb23, thanks a lot of the great information.

Just to make sure that this is not caused by the network, could you try to lock the device on the GSM/2G network and make a few calls and see how it works when it's not using 3G or LTE (if your operator supports VoLTE) to make the call? I understand that this is not the most fun troubleshooting if this occurs randomly, but it's an important part of the troubleshooting. You can change the preferred network type in Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile networks > Preferred network type.

You can also try with a different SIM card in your device, if you have one that you can borrow from a friend, colleague or family member.
