I got a xperia. Z about a week ago and I find its camera to be sub par and nowhere close to 13mp. Also it heats up and temperature goes up to 45 degrees which is not comfortable to hold at all. Coming back to camera the photos taken by xperia z in burst mode at mid level captures better details than normal or superior auto mode and people at xperiablog are aware about it. The pics when viewed on bigger screen comes out like oil painting. At full resolution the pics just break. Leave alone low light even in incandescent lighting pics are horrible beyond 5 MP and that too after tweaking the manual settings. First time I am feeling let down by Sony mobile after using about 10 phones from them in past.
Solved! Go to Solution.
I've only notice the overcompression of files to a smaller size which is causing the distortion in some of the pictures taken on my Z. I wish there was an option to turn the auto compression off so we can have the larger file but with cripser detail available to us, after all...we did pay $$ for the phone and its something that can be achieved in a software update surely?
Are the camera software/driver bugs being fixed or should I sell Xperia Z ?
If you expect professional camera like picture quality from this phone you should sell your Xperia Z.
In my opinion the Pictures are overcompressed by the camera. (btw. GeoffH has the same suspect)
I don´t know why there is no option to save pictures in RAW format.
I´m a professional photographer, but I don´t expect a mobile with 13 MP resolution on a very tiny chip and with a 3 mm diameter lens to be comparable with my Canon 5D MK2.
How should this work?
I cant´t find any technical description of the sensor and the lens, but the size may be not large than a few square millimeters.
I will do some compareable shots at the weekend with different phones and DSLR.
Kind regards
Maninder,
You are correct, I am also having the issue with the camera. No one taking care of this issue at Sony Mobile's end.
You can see my thread with the sample image at http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/123115

I am always a sony supporter... i change my Arc to Z.. the camera is not doing its job well...Is Sony going to responsible wif this issue? they cheated us for the 13mbps camera... the front camera is more clear n much better than the rear camera... WT... is sony doing?? wat should i do??
I must say, a lot of the pictures I've taken look like watercolor paintings.

I am not even comparing xperia z to DSLR/Point and Shoot cameras.
I am comparing it to my xperia Pro and Xperia ARC or K810i from Sony itself and they produce more crisper pics.Yes the issue is JPEG overcompression, I have removed JPEG artifacts and decompressed images using photoshop and they come out fine.. But you dont expect me to that to every pic moreever the Night mode ruins the pic instead of improving it. I do not want to sell my phone as I hope Sony can improve the Software/Driver wither via a patch or JB 4.2.2.
First time I am feeling let down by Sony, atleast it should take better snaps than Smartphones of yesteryears. It is Just a case of messed up software. I thing they released it with incomplete software. without proper testing to sell in large numbers prior to Samsung season begins.
P.S. I still love the design though and headphone sound is awesome and viewing angles issue is for people who view phone hung upside down )
Will sony solve this software issue.

What I have heard from sony is that they will fix it in 4.2.2 update hope they deliver it right this time.
They got the $$ now lets see if they value it or I will defer my decision to buy Sony any longer
